TWISTERS - Review

Twisters is the kind of film that knows exactly what it is: a big, boisterous, effects-laden spectacle designed to be enjoyed on the biggest screen possible. Yet, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, the film has found a new home on VOD, offering viewers the chance to experience its thrilling storm chases and heartfelt moments from the comfort of their own living rooms.

Director Lee Isaac Chung, best known for the intimate drama Minari, takes a surprising detour into the realm of disaster cinema with Twisters. The film follows a familiar formula established by its predecessor. Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a haunted meteorologist, returns to tornado alley to confront her past and potentially change the future. Her path intersects with the charismatic and reckless storm chaser Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). The dynamic between the two, a blend of rivalry and attraction, provides a compelling emotional core amidst the chaos.

What Twisters lacks in originality, it makes up for in sheer entertainment value. The film is a visual feast, with stunningly rendered tornadoes that will leave you breathless. The action sequences are expertly crafted, building tension and delivering explosive payoffs. While the plot may be predictable, the film's commitment to spectacle keeps viewers engaged.

Glen Powell, fresh off the success of Top Gun: Maverick, proves once again to be a charismatic screen presence. His portrayal of Tyler brings a much-needed dose of humor and energy to the film. Daisy Edgar-Jones, though competent, is somewhat overshadowed by her male co-star. Anthony Ramos delivers a solid performance, but his character is unfortunately underutilized.

One of the film's biggest disappointments is its failure to fully capitalize on the opportunity to address climate change. While the increasing frequency and intensity of the storms are hinted at, the film ultimately shies away from delving deeper into the environmental implications. It's a missed opportunity to use the platform of a blockbuster to raise awareness about a pressing issue.

Despite its shortcomings, Twisters is a pleasure to watch, it delivers on its promise of adrenaline-fueled entertainment. The film's nostalgic nods to the original Twister will undoubtedly resonate with fans of the 1996 classic. While the theatrical experience may have been ideal, Twisters holds up well on the smaller screen, making it a solid choice for a night in with friends or family.

With its availability on VOD, Twisters has the potential to reach a wider audience. Whether you're a fan of disaster movies, looking for a mindless escape, or simply curious to see what all the fuss is about, this film offers a fun time at the movies. Twisters is a high-stakes gamble on nostalgia that largely pays off, thanks in part to the undeniable charm of Glen Powell. Just be prepared to suspend disbelief and embrace the sheer spectacle

Twisters is now available to rent or purchase on your favorite VOD platform.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE Ending Explained

MULHOLLAND DRIVE is a complex and surreal film directed by David Lynch, known for its non-linear narrative and dreamlike sequences. The ending is open to interpretation and has been the subject of much debate among viewers. Here's a breakdown of the ending: Diane's Dream vs. Reality: Throughout the film, there are two main narrative threads: one follows Betty/Diane's dreamlike experiences in Hollywood, and the other delves into Diane's harsh reality. The ending reveals that the majority of the film has been a dream constructed by Diane Selwyn, a failed actress, as a means to escape the guilt and pain of her actions. Betty/Diane's Descent into Madness: Betty, played by Naomi Watts, represents Diane's idealized self—a hopeful and innocent aspiring actress. However, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Betty's story is unraveling, and her identity begins to merge with Diane's. This culminates in the revelation that Betty is merely a construct of Di...
