Vertical to Release Thordur Palsson’s The Damned in UK and Irish Cinemas

Vertical has confirmed the theatrical release of The Damned, an ominous psychological thriller directed by Thordur Palsson, set to hit UK and Irish cinemas on January 10, 2025. The film stars Odessa Young (The Staircase, Mothering Sunday) and Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Gangs of London) in a chilling tale that explores the harrowing choices faced by a community in dire circumstances.

Set against the backdrop of a brutal 19th-century winter, The Damned centers on Eva, a widow grappling with an impossible decision after a shipwreck occurs off the coast of her isolated fishing outpost. As provisions dwindle, Eva and her tight-knit community must confront a moral dilemma: should they prioritize rescuing the shipwrecked crew or safeguard their own survival? As guilt mounts from their choices, a pervasive sense of dread takes hold, leading the community to believe they are being punished for their actions.

The Damned premiered to acclaim at the Cork International Film Festival 2024, where it received an Honourable Mention. The festival praised the film as "a juggernaut," noting its ability to breathe fresh life into the psychological horror genre through its powerful landscape cinematography and compelling performances.

Drawing inspiration from the haunting Westfjords of Iceland in the 1800s, Palsson’s film captures both the stark beauty and oppressive atmosphere of its setting. The director, a native Icelander, has woven elements of folklore and mythology into the narrative, crafting a story deeply rooted in his cultural heritage. "Every Icelander has heard all kinds of different variations of the truth – all elements of our history that have been passed down," Palsson explains. "One of these stories was about a ship that sank off the shores of Iceland, with all survivors being killed by the natives. Having known of this, I started to write a story relating to it and kept fleshing it out, adding darker elements."

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Rory McCann (Game of Thrones), Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley), Turlough Convery (Belfast), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Francis Magee (The Tourist), and Mícheál Óg Lane (Calvary), all of whom deliver haunting performances that elevate the film’s tense atmosphere.

Running for 89 minutes and rated 15, The Damned is poised to captivate audiences with its blend of psychological tension and folklore-inspired storytelling. As anticipation builds for its release, this chilling thriller promises to leave a lasting impression on viewers and solidify Palsson's place in the landscape of modern horror cinema.

Mark your calendars for January 10, 2025, and prepare to experience the moral complexities and haunting beauty of The Damned as it unravels the dark threads of human nature in the face of survival.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE Ending Explained

MULHOLLAND DRIVE is a complex and surreal film directed by David Lynch, known for its non-linear narrative and dreamlike sequences. The ending is open to interpretation and has been the subject of much debate among viewers. Here's a breakdown of the ending: Diane's Dream vs. Reality: Throughout the film, there are two main narrative threads: one follows Betty/Diane's dreamlike experiences in Hollywood, and the other delves into Diane's harsh reality. The ending reveals that the majority of the film has been a dream constructed by Diane Selwyn, a failed actress, as a means to escape the guilt and pain of her actions. Betty/Diane's Descent into Madness: Betty, played by Naomi Watts, represents Diane's idealized self—a hopeful and innocent aspiring actress. However, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Betty's story is unraveling, and her identity begins to merge with Diane's. This culminates in the revelation that Betty is merely a construct of Di...
